A little guide to the social and cognitive changes in your 6-month-old

A little guide to the social and cognitive changes in your 6-month-old

As your little one approaches that 6-month mark, you’ll notice a wonderful array of social and cognitive developments as they begin to explore the world around them. Understanding what these changes mean and what they indicate about your little one's growth can help you support your bub's overall development. This is an incredibly exciting time for your little one as they start to become more curious and interactive, so please do share some updates with us. We just love hearing from our LittleOak families and how your bub is progressing.

Social milestones

  • Your little one will start to recognise familiar faces – particularly immediate family members.

  • Your bub may begin to respond to their own name, by turning their head towards you. This shows they are starting to understand their own identity.

  • They may also like to look at themselves in the mirror (why wouldn’t they – they're gorgeous).

  • Your little one will start making noises and may even put vowel sounds together.

  • Your bub will also become more engaged and interactive, often babbling, smiling and laughing in response to facial expressions or sounds.

  • Your little one may begin showing affection by reaching out to be picked up.

Cognitive milestones

  • Bubs will also start putting anything and everything in their mouths. This is important for oral exploration and discovery but do keep an eye on them.

  • Your little one might start crawling.

  • Your little one is starting to understand object permanence, which is the idea that objects still exist even when they are out of sight. In fact, if you’ve played peekaboo with your bub, you’re helping them develop this skill (Mum or dad is still there, just hiding!).

  • Your little one’s hand-eye coordination will also begin to improve. They may be able to pick up objects more easily and move them from one hand to the other.

From our family to yours, we hope this was helpful. Has your little one reached any of these milestones? Leave a comment below – we can’t wait to hear.
