Preparing your little ones for daylight savings

Preparing your little ones for daylight savings

As parents, we understand that approaching daylight savings can often trigger a wave of anxiety. The thought of adjusting your child's sleep schedule can be a daunting task, and often cause issues at tuck-in time. In LittleOak's Essential Parenting Toolkit, we're here to share some valuable tips to help you make the transition smoother for your little ones.

  1. Gradually adjust bedtime

One of the most effective ways to prepare your child for daylight savings is to gradually shift their bedtime earlier. Plan ahead and be sure to start this transition about a week or two before the actual time change. We recommend gradually adjusting their bedtime by about 5-10 minutes earlier each night, making it easier for your child to adapt to the new schedule with (hopefully) fewer sleep disruptions.

  1. Establish a consistent bedtime routine

A consistent bedtime routine is a game changer. Whether this includes a soothing bath, a bedtime story, or a comforting lullaby, a reliable bedtime routine will help prepare your child for sleep. A consistent routine serves as a clear signal for winding down, so your little one understands bedtime is approaching. This will also offer comfort and stability during daylight savings time shifts.

  1. Patience is key

Remember, it takes time for children to adapt to changes in their sleep schedule, just as it does for adults. Be patient and understanding during this adjustment period—don't worry, your child's internal clock will eventually synchronise with the new schedule. Encourage a calm and soothing environment during bedtime to make the transition as seamless as possible. Hint: dimming the lights doesn't hurt.

Our team here at LittleOak understands the challenges that come with adjusting your little one's sleep schedule. As parents ourselves, we're here to offer a helping hand. We hope these insights help you navigate any upcoming time changes with confidence and ease, allowing everyone to enjoy the longer days ahead.
